An economist urges people between 27 and 45 to invest: "The public pension system is the biggest Ponzi scheme in history."

A more or less recurring debate is the future of the pension system and whether it will endure so that future generations can benefit from it and retire with a pension that guarantees their income until the end of their lives. While the government is making efforts (and asking the population to do so with a small increase in contributions through the Intergenerational Equity Mechanism), some experts are advocating for investment, assuming there will be no money for pensions in several decades.

This is what economist Fernando Sánchez asserts. The investment expert gave an interview on the podcast "I Have a Plan" in which he urged people between the ages of 27 and 45 not to delay their major financial decisions: whether to invest to protect themselves for the future or not.

Sánchez is a staunch advocate of investment , as he believes that " saving is the biggest mistake you can make ." The expert asserts that these are the best years to avoid investing and putting off decisions that, if made later, could permanently destroy a person's financial independence and force them to rely on work until retirement.

According to Sánchez, this age is the period in life when workers begin to receive more stable income after years of more irregular working life. Therefore, it is considered the best time to start investing.

Sánchez's premise, however, is to start investing as quickly as possible because, in his opinion, the public pension system will not be sustainable in the medium term, given that each public pension is currently supported by 2.1 contributors and demographic trends are moving toward an aging population.

That's why the economist makes a controversial statement: " The Spanish public pension system is the biggest Ponzi scheme in history ."

Where to invest so you don't depend on a pension

But where to invest? Sánchez is an advocate of long-term investing, which he considers boring but effective. The expert recommends investing in index funds or ETFs (exchange-traded funds), which he believes are suitable for inexperienced investors.

If the investor is more experienced, Sánchez clarifies, a good option is to invest in solid, established companies . The expert cites Microsoft, AMSL, and Apple as examples, although he advises, in any case, choosing a company whose business model is known and not going in blind.
